[4817] WOODCUT : Jules Verne's Prairie Sailing Sledge by Barry Moser. Signed & Numbered Limited Edition.

This original signed and numbered limited edition woodcut is by Barry Moser. It is pencil signed in the lower left corner, and numbered 7/150 in the lower right corner. Printed on an off-white, cream-toned paper.

This is a woodcut of the sledge rigged to sail on land, from Jules Verne's novel, "Around The World In Eighty Days", shown sailing across American prairie grasslands.

"There Mr. Fogg examined a curious vehicle, a kind of frame on two long beams, a little raised in front like the runners of a sledge, and upon which there was room for five or six persons. A high mast was fixed on the frame, held firmly by metallic lashings, to which was attached a large brigantine sail. This mast held an iron stay upon which to hoist a jib-sail. Behind, a sort of rudder served to guide the vehicle. It was, in short, a sledge rigged like a sloop. During the winter, when the trains are blocked up by the snow, these sledges make extremely rapid journeys across the frozen plains from one station to another. Provided with more sails than a cutter, and with the wind behind them, they slip over the surface of the prairies with a speed equal if not superior to that of the express trains."
Measures 8 3/4 inches x 6 5/8 inches, including margins.

The image shown here is of the actual woodcut being sold, and shows its actual condition - which is NEAR FINE with only the faintest signs of handling.

CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGE

The serigraph depicts Herman Melville's great white whale, MOBY DICK.

This original serigraph was issued by LeRoy Neiman in 1978 in a limited edition of 300 pencil signed and numbered copies. It is numbered in pencil "174/300" in the lower left margin. And it is signed in pencil by LeRoy Neiman in the lower right margin. Silk-screened at Styria Studio, New York, and bearing the studio's blind emboss in the lower left margin.

Measures a large and very dramatic 36 1/2 inches x 25 inches, including borders. Image size is 30 5/8 inches x 19 inches. Unframed.

The colors are bright and vibrant. The image and signature areas are in beautiful condition, with no defects. The white borders of the serigraph are evenly age-toned and show only minimal signs of handling on the edges.

I acquired this original serigraph several years ago from an art gallery in Hawaii that had gone out of business. I acquired several numbers of this limited edition at the time, and I have sold all of them except for two - the one listed here, and another which I have kept for myself.

If you are in the Baltimore area, you can see another copy of this Limited Edition serigraph on the wall at the University of Baltimore's Langsdale Library, where it is displayed with other great nautical prints, famous ships' bells, etc. on the main floor next to the auditorium.
